Oxytocin:
Trade name: Pitocin
Pregnancy classification: FDA category C
Usual Dosage: Intravenous or intramuscular route, initial dose of 0.5-1 milliunits/min, titrated to the desired effect, usually no more than 20 milliunits/min; frequency is usually every 15-30 minutes.
Indications: Induction of labor, stimulation of labor, control of postpartum bleeding
Adverse Effects: Tachysystole, water intoxication, fetal distress
Precautions/Contraindications: hypertension, previous cesarean delivery, grand multiparity, fetal distress, placenta previa
Interactions: None known
Nursing considerations: Assess FHT, contraction pattern, monitor fluid and electrolyte balance, monitor maternal and fetal response, educate patient on potential adverse effects, reassess need for ongoing use
Magnesium sulfate:
Trade name: Magnesium sulfate
Pregnancy classification: FDA category D
Usual Dosage: Intravenous route, 4-6 g in 4-6 hours for tocolysis, 2-4 g/hour for seizures; frequency is usually every 4-6 hours.
Indications: Tocolysis in preterm labor, seizure prophylaxis in eclampsia
Adverse Effects: Flushing, hypotension, respiratory depression, decreased reflexes, kidney dysfunction
Precautions/Contraindications: Renal impairment, AV block, hypotension
Interactions: None known
Nursing considerations: Assess FHT, contraction pattern, monitor maternal and fetal response, educate patient on potential adverse effects, reassess need for ongoing use, monitor kidney function
Labetalol:
Trade name: Trandate
Pregnancy classification: FDA category C
Usual Dosage: Intravenous or oral route, initial dose of 20-40 mg every 10 minutes, titrated to the desired effect, usual total dose is 200-300 mg; frequency is usually every 4-6 hours.
Indications: Hypertensive crisis in pregnancy
Adverse Effects: Hypotension, bradycardia, bronchospasm
Precautions/Contraindications: Asthma, heart block, hypotension
Interactions: None known

Apresoline:
Trade name: Apresoline
Pregnancy classification: FDA category C
Usual Dosage: Oral route, initial dose of 100 mg every 6 hours, titrated to the desired effect; frequency is usually every 6 hours.
Indications: Hypertensive crisis in pregnancy
Adverse Effects: Headache, nausea, tachycardia, drowsiness
Precautions/Contraindications: Cardiac arrhythmias, heart block, liver disease
Interactions: None known

Betamethasone (Celestone):

Indications: Preterm labor, to accelerate fetal lung maturity
