MGSC 5151 Final Project Guidelines
The project is conducted in teams of five students, with a focus on healthcare analytics. You need
to choose a topic within the healthcare domain. Identify a problem or area that can be improved or
resolved through the application of healthcare analytics. The goal is to provide actionable
insights and recommendations to enhance healthcare operations, decision-making, or strategy.
Explore various aspects within the healthcare sector, considering topics such as:
• Patient outcomes and treatment effectiveness
• Resource allocation and optimization in healthcare facilities
• Healthcare cost management and financial efficiency
• Predictive modeling for disease diagnosis or prevention
• Patient satisfaction and experience improvement
This narrowed focus on healthcare ensures that the projects align with the course theme and
contribute to the broader field of healthcare analytics.
Project Objective:
Develop a comprehensive healthcare dashboard addressing a specific area of interest within the
healthcare domain. Analyze the dashboard data to identify gaps or areas for improvement in
healthcare processes.
Dashboard Development:
Data Selection:
Choose a healthcare-related dataset or datasets aligned with your interests. Data could include
patient outcomes, hospital performance, healthcare costs, claims data, or any other relevant
healthcare metrics.
2
Dashboard Design:
Create a visually appealing and user-friendly dashboard using a tool of your choice (e.g.,
Tableau, Power BI, etc.). Ensure the dashboard provides a holistic view of the chosen healthcare
data.
Data Analysis:
Identify Gaps:
Analyze the dashboard data to identify gaps, trends, or areas requiring attention within the
healthcare context. Utilize appropriate analytics techniques to derive meaningful insights.
Results Analysis:
Analyze and interpret the results obtained from the dashboard. Discuss any noteworthy findings,
patterns, or trends.
Recommendations:
Based on the dashboard analysis, provide well-founded suggestions and recommendations for
improving healthcare processes or addressing identified gaps.
Presentation and Reporting:
Prepare a professional report and presentation summarizing the entire analytics process, findings,
recommendations, and the potential impact on healthcare.
Deliverables:
Comprehensive Final Project Report: A detailed report summarizing the entire project,
including findings, recommendations, and the potential impact on healthcare. This report should
be in PDF format.
Data Sources Documentation: A document outlining the data sources used in the project,
providing context, descriptions, and any necessary metadata for the collected data.
Data Analysis and Modeling Artifacts: This includes the relevant files and materials used for
data analysis and modeling, such as data preprocessing scripts, code used for modeling, and any
other tools employed. This may be organized into a dedicated folder or file repository.
Final Presentation: A PowerPoint (PPT) presentation (between 10 and 20 slides) summarizing
key project aspects, including objectives, data analysis methods, findings, and actionable
recommendations. Additionally, provide a PDF version of the presentation for reference.
3
Report Format:
I. Abstract: Provide a concise summary of the project, including system requirements at a high
level, the proposed model and solution, key results, and noteworthy observations.
II. Introduction: Introduce the selected topic of interest, provide a brief literature survey. Clearly
outline the problem statement and describe the proposed approach for making recommendations
to improve the system.
III. Data: Detail the data sources used in the project, explaining their relevance and any data
preprocessing steps taken. Include information on data collection, cleaning, and any
transformations.
IV. Model: Explain the analytical models, methodologies, and techniques employed in the project.
Discuss the rationale behind the chosen models and how they were implemented.
V. Analysis and Findings: Present the results of the analysis, including data visualizations,
insights gained, and any statistical outcomes. Use clear and concise language to communicate the
project’s findings.
VI. Conclusions: Summarize the overall work done, emphasizing the significance of your findings
and recommendations. Avoid directly copying more than 10 consecutive words from the body of
your report to maintain originality.
VII. References: Include a list of references used in your project, with a minimum of five sources,
including at least two journal papers. Follow a consistent citation style (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago)
for your references.
Evaluation Criteria:
The project will be assessed based on the following criteria:
Data Management: Proficiency in collecting, cleaning, and effectively analyzing real-world data,
demonstrating the ability to work with messy or incomplete datasets.
Analytical Proficiency: The depth and quality of analytics techniques used, showcasing the team’s
aptitude in applying advanced analytical methods to solve problems.
Problem-Solving Capability: The demonstrated relevance of analytics in effectively addressing
specific and practical challenges, highlighting the project’s ability to provide valuable insights.
Recommendation Impact: The assessment of recommendations for their practicality and
potential impact on improving the current healthcare system.
4
Communication Skills: The clarity and effectiveness of both the final written report and the
presentation, emphasizing the team’s ability to convey complex findings and recommendations to
various stakeholders.
IMPORTANT:
Any sources (open source online, books, etc.) for material used in your project must be
referenced, including web sources, and your contributions must be clearly stated in your report.
You will have a 10-minute presentation slot scheduled during the final lecture class as determined
by the instructor.
All team members must sign the Term Project Work Breakdown Form, which should be included
at the beginning of the project report.
