Nursing’s Role in Decision Making
After studying Module 4: Lecture Materials & Resources, discuss what the nursing’s role is and/or should be in decision making regarding selecting information systems.
As healthcare continues to adopt and integrate new technology, nurses have an increasingly important role in decision making regarding selecting information systems. Nursing informatics plays a critical role in optimizing the use of information technology to support safe, effective, and efficient patient care.
Nurses can contribute to the selection of information systems by providing valuable insights into the specific needs and workflow of their unit or organization. Nurses are often the primary users of these systems, so their input can ensure that the system is intuitive, user-friendly, and meets the needs of all stakeholders.
In addition, nurses can provide input on the selection of clinical decision support systems, such as alerts and reminders, that can help improve patient safety and outcomes. Nurses also play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and completeness of clinical documentation, so they can provide valuable input on the selection of electronic health record systems that support efficient documentation workflows.
Nurses can also provide input on the selection of patient engagement tools and patient portals, which can improve patient education and self-management, and help to enhance patient satisfaction and engagement in their care.
Ultimately, the nursing role in decision making regarding selecting information systems is critical to ensure that these systems support safe, effective, and efficient patient care, and that they meet the specific needs and workflows of their unit or organization.
