Discussion 1

For this discussion, synthesize the findings from the readings this week and discuss the psychobiological impact on populations you have identified for your Unit 2 assignment. Discuss how environmental, biological, and psychobiological factors may contribute to challenges in the development of resilience for this selected group. Provide three recommendations on how these factors may be addressed to help support the development of resilience.
Risk Factors as Protective Factors
The discussion post provides a comprehensive overview of the shift in research focus from children’s resilience to adult’s resilience, and the changing definition of resilience from simply withstanding adversity to encompassing positive emotions and self-regulation. The post also highlights the importance of genetic and environmental factors in resilience, and how it can either result in a swift recovery or the ability to deflect adversity. The post suggests three psychological traits to having resilience, namely secure attachment, experiencing positive emotions, and having a purpose in life.

In support of the post’s discussion, an article by Masten (2014) emphasizes the dynamic and complex nature of resilience and how it involves multiple systems such as biology, psychology, and social factors. The article highlights the importance of adaptive systems that can cope with stress and adversity and the role of protective factors such as social support, positive emotions, and cognitive flexibility. Masten also argues that resilience is not a fixed trait but can be developed and strengthened through interventions such as social-emotional learning programs and therapy.
