Should people with a family history of Alzheimer’s disease be tested for the APOE4 gene?

Knowing one’s APOE genotype may cause anxiety, depression, guilt, or stigma, especially if there is no effective treatment or prevention for Alzheimer’s disease. Some people may feel hopeless or helpless about their future, while others may feel discriminated or isolated by their relatives or society. Therefore, genetic counseling is recommended before and after genetic testing for APOE4 to help individuals understand the implications and limitations of the test results and cope with their emotional reactions.
Third, genetic testing for APOE4 may have ethical and legal implications for individuals and their families.
