Theories describe and explain what happens during development

Directions: Theories describe and explain what happens during development. Theories also offer a way of trying to predict behavior. Often theories can be used to understand the people with whom we are closest. For example, Erikson’s 8 Stages might help you understand why your teenage son cares more about his friend’s opinion than your perspective.
For this discussion, think about different development theories and select one:
• Piaget’s 4 Stages of Cognitive Development
• Erikson’s 8 Stages of Psychosocial Development
• Behaviorism
• Social Learning Theory
• Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory
• Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory

Initial Post:
I have chosen Erikson’s 8 Stages of Psychosocial Development.
An example from my life is my sister, who is currently in her mid-20s and struggling with her sense of identity. She recently graduated from college and is having trouble figuring out what she wants to do with her life. She feels lost and unsure of who she is and what her purpose is.
Erikson’s concept of the fifth stage, Identity vs. Role Confusion, helps me understand my sister’s situation. According to Erikson, during adolescence, individuals go through a stage where they explore and develop a sense of identity. If they are successful, they will have a strong sense of self; if they are unsuccessful, they will experience role confusion.
In my sister’s case, she is struggling with this stage, which is causing her to feel uncertain and confused about her identity. Understanding this theory helps me to empathize with her and support her as she works through this stage.

I found your example of Erikson’s 8 Stages of Psychosocial Development helpful in understanding the theory. I also chose this theory, and your example helped me see how it applies to real-life situations.
In particular, your example of your sister struggling with her sense of identity during the fifth stage, Identity vs. Role Confusion, was informative. It helped me to see how this stage can manifest in different ways and how it can affect someone’s life.
Your post also reminded me of the importance of empathy and support during this stage. It’s crucial to provide a supportive environment for individuals going through this stage, as it can be a challenging time. Overall, your post helped me deepen my understanding of Erikson’s theory and how it can be applied in real-life situations.
