Health Literacy and Person Education Appraisal/Evaluation
Health Literacy and Person Education Project: Registered Nurses are responsible for person
education that is based on an understanding of health literacy. Learners will explore health
literacy and critically evaluate an online educational item. Please review the sample projects
and recording in the Health Literacy Project Materials folder.
You are required to meet (in-person or virtually) with a person from a profession other
than nursing for this assignment. Together, you will discuss literacy, health literacy, and
how the approach to person education would be different depending on the literacy and
health literacy levels of the target population. Begin to identify who this person might be and
make arrangements to meet with him or her as soon as possible. Examples might include a
public health official, teacher, social worker, physical therapist, physician assistant, etc. (See
grading rubric below for more details.)
You must use the Readability Tool to determine readability levels. http://read-able.com/
You must use the framework at NIH: Evaluating Health Information on the Internet for your
appraisal
https://ods.od.nih.gov/Health_Information/How_To_Evaluate_Health_Information_on_the_Inter
net_Questions_and_Answers.aspx
You must use a recent and scholarly journal article.
You may choose to use the textbooks, along with the other learning materials, from this course as
resources. The e-book Parnell (2014) is highly recommended as a resource for health literacy.
You are required to provide a definition or understanding of the concepts credibility and validity.
You are also required to apply these concepts within each of the NIH criterion noted in the
grading rubric (see below). To assist in applying the concepts of validity and credibility to the
information found or not found on the website or online person education material you are
critiquing, consider reviewing the following websites to learn more about validity and credibility.
Give strong consideration to not using a dictionary definition of credibility and validity for
this assignment. Past students who have used the dictionary definitions had a more difficult time
applying the concepts appropriately.

https://library.columbia.edu/libraries/undergraduate/evaluating_web.html
Learners will then create a PowerPoint Presentation that addresses health literacy issues and
applies principals while critiquing an online educational item. All the information is to be
supported by current research and references must be listed (have a reference list at the end of
the PowerPoint). For this assignment, cite the website, the Readability Test Tool, and at least one
journal article. For detailed information, see the grading rubric.
***Be sure to cite and reference all sources! In-text citations occur with the information being
reported on the slides. The matching full references should be found on a reference list at the end
of the PowerPoint.***
Post the Health Literacy and Person Education Project to two locations:
Added to the student portfolio by 11:59 pm on the designated due date (day of the week will vary
depending on which NURS 420 course you are in).**

4. For this assignment, it is easiest if you choose a website that has specific
information intended for persons, not necessarily healthcare workers like
nurses or physicians. Examples might include alz.org or cancer.org. and then
narrow down from there (e.g., “what is breast cancer?”, or “what is
Alzheimer’s?”).
Use speaker notes for information so that you do not overcrowd the PowerPoint
slides.
1 In the introduction or next slide, tell the reader you are critiquing a person education
website.
Provide the URL address to the website you are critiquing in the introduction.
4 Identify the intended population for the online person education material you will
critique. For example, if the person education material is about scoliosis, describe the
population the information is intended for—in this case parents of teenagers and
teenagers may be the population.

Health Literacy and Person Education Project: Registered Nurses have the responsibility of providing person education based on an understanding of health literacy. In this project, learners will explore health literacy and critically evaluate an online educational resource. Please review the sample projects and recording in the Health Literacy Project Materials folder.
For this assignment, you are required to meet (in-person or virtually) with a person from a profession other than nursing. Together, you will discuss literacy, health literacy, and how the approach to person education would differ based on the literacy and health literacy levels of the target population. Start identifying who this person might be and make arrangements to meet with them as soon as possible. Examples of professionals could include public health officials, teachers, social workers, physical therapists, physician assistants, etc. (See grading rubric below for more details.)
Here are the guidelines for completing the project:
Use the Readability Tool (http://read-able.com/) to determine the readability levels of the online person education material you will critique. Report the following in your PowerPoint presentation:
a. Average reading grade level
b. Age reading level
c. Explain what Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease means and provide the score for the person education material. Assess if it is appropriate for your target population.
d. Explain what Flesch Kincaid Grade Level means and provide the score for the person education material. Assess if it is appropriate for your target population.
e. Explain what Automated Readability Index (ARI) means and provide the score for the person education material. Assess if it is appropriate for your target population.
Use the framework provided by the NIH for evaluating health information on the internet. Create a slide that introduces the need to evaluate online resources. In this section, include:
a. Definition or understanding of credibility
b. Definition or understanding of validity
Cite and reference scholarly resources appropriately.
Apply the criteria from the NIH Evaluating Health Information to your online person education material. Address the following criteria on separate slides (6 slides in total), using speaker notes to elaborate on each answer:
a. Date of issue or revision: Is the site current? Is the medical evidence on the site current? What is the latest date noted on the site? Explain how the information, or lack thereof, impacts the credibility or validity of the person education material.
b. Credentials of the source: Whose name is on it and/or who runs the website? Is there any bias or sponsorship, such as commercial uses of the website? Look for advertisements and assess if they introduce bias. Explain how the information, or lack thereof, impacts the credibility or validity of the person education material.
c. Accuracy and evidence: Is the information accurate? Who is the intended audience? Is the information appropriate for the intended audience? Is there a disclaimer on the webpage about seeking medical advice or fact/fiction? Explain how the information, or lack thereof, impacts the credibility or validity of the person education material.
d. Multimedia or applications: Do the multimedia/application tools work? Are you able to navigate the website easily? Is the website well-organized and do the hyperlinks work? Explain how the information, or lack thereof, impacts the credibility or validity of the person education material.
e. Other links, tools, and resources: Does it work with any other tools and resources? Are there links to other websites? Explain how the information, or lack thereof, impacts the credibility or validity of the person education material.
f. Protection and security: Is it secure? How are user interactions managed? What information does the website collect? Does it protect your privacy? Look for privacy policies and areas where users can post or ask questions. Explain how the information, or lack thereof, impacts the credibility or validity of the person education material.
Include an introduction/purpose slide in your PowerPoint that informs the viewer that you will critique an online person education material using the Finding Quality Information framework at NIH and principles of literacy and health literacy. Identify the name of the online person education material you will critique and provide a few key points about it. Cite any evidence from the literature and ensure you have a matching reference on the reference page. Choose a website that specifically targets persons and not just healthcare professionals. Use speaker notes for information to avoid overcrowding the PowerPoint slides.
Define what literacy and health literacy mean on separate slides (2 slides in total).
Meet with a person from a profession or discipline other than nursing and discuss literacy, health literacy, and how the approach to person education might differ based on the literacy and health literacy levels of the target population. You may show this person the online person education material or website you are critiquing, but it’s not required. Based on the insights gained from the interview and using one or more scholarly resources, describe the similarities or differences between literacy and health literacy. Next, describe the connection between literacy and health literacy in your specific target population. Incorporate the concepts discussed during the interview. Finally, using the principles of health literacy learned throughout the course, describe why you believe the content of the chosen online person education material is appropriate or not appropriate for the target population. Indicate the professional role and/or professional title of the person you interviewed (not their name).
Create a summary slide that summarizes the entire presentation. Include four to five key points from the critique and your recommendation on the appropriateness of the website for your target population.
Include a Reference(s) slide with scholarly and credible references. Cite and reference the website, the Readability Test Tool, and at least one journal article. Follow APA Paper Writing Service by Expert Writers Pro Paper Help: Online Research Essay Help for citations and references.
