Culturally Safe Care for Mrs. Aneesh Ayman
Introduction
This paper will discuss the cultural needs of Mrs. Aneesh Ayman, a 42-year-old Syrian refugee woman admitted to hospital for abdominal pain investigation. It will argue that providing culturally safe care is essential for ethical and effective nursing practice.
Cultural Needs of Mrs. Aneesh Ayman
Mrs. Ayman’s primary language is Arabic and she practices Islam. Therefore, her key cultural needs include access to an interpreter, halal food options, and privacy and space for religious practices (Al-Krenawi & Graham, 2000; Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2016). An interpreter is necessary to allow for informed consent and shared decision making regarding her care (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2020). Halal food prepared and stored separately from non-halal foods is important to respect her religious dietary restrictions (Al-Krenawi & Graham, 2000). Mrs. Ayman also requires privacy during personal care from male nurses and a quiet space for daily prayers as per her faith (Al-Krenawi & Graham, 2000). Understanding and accommodating these needs will help establish trust in the therapeutic relationship.
Importance of Culturally Safe Care in Nursing
Culturally safe care is essential in nursing to provide ethical, respectful and effective care (Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2016). A person’s culture influences their health beliefs, behaviors and preferences, so failure to understand or accommodate their cultural needs can damage the nurse-patient relationship and compliance with treatment (Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2016). It may also lead to misdiagnosis or health inequities (Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2016). Furthermore, not providing culturally safe care violates a patient’s basic human rights to dignity and self-determination (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2020). The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (2020) mandates that nurses must respect cultural diversity and care for patients in a culturally safe way. In summary, a culturally safe approach is necessary for quality care outcomes, patient wellbeing, ethical practice standards and trust in the healthcare system (Nursing Council of New Zealand, 2016).
Conclusion
In conclusion, understanding Mrs. Ayman’s cultural needs as a Syrian Muslim woman and providing culturally safe care is essential for ethical and effective nursing practice. It establishes trust, supports her wellbeing and respects her basic human rights. Culturally safe care should be a core competency for all nurses to provide quality, equitable care to an increasingly diverse population.
