Observations of the Lake View Suburb in Sentinel City®
Demographics and Subsystems:
The Lake View Suburb is a predominantly residential area with well-maintained houses, manicured lawns, and tree-lined streets. During the virtual tour, the predominant race/ethnicity of the population appeared to be Caucasian, with a mix of younger and older adults. There were also a few African Americans and Hispanics seen in the neighborhood.
The age ranges of the population appeared to be diverse, with a significant number of elderly individuals seen during the tour. The gender mix was relatively balanced, with both males and females observed in the area.
There were no obvious signs of poverty or wealth, with the houses appearing to be in good condition, and the neighborhood looking well-maintained. However, it is worth noting that poverty and wealth can sometimes be hidden in suburban areas, and a deeper investigation may be necessary to fully understand the socioeconomic status of the residents.
The streets were relatively quiet during the tour, with mostly families, couples, and elderly individuals seen. There were no signs of homeless individuals or beggars in the neighborhood, but there were several dogs seen on-leash during the tour.
In terms of stores, there were several small retail stores and a few grocery stores in the area, but there did not appear to be any major chain stores. It was also noted that many of the residents seemed to travel by car, as there was a noticeable absence of public transportation in the area.
As for community services, it was observed that there were several churches of different denominations in the neighborhood, but there were no visible schools or employment offices. The lack of visible social services in the area could be due to the fact that these services are often provided in larger city centers.
Target Population of Interest:
For this discussion, the target population of interest will be the elderly population in the Lake View Suburb. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2020, there were approximately 13.7% of individuals aged 65 years and older in the Lake View Suburb. In comparison, the national average for individuals aged 65 years and older is 16.5%.
Significant Health Concerns:
One of the significant health concerns for the elderly population in the Lake View Suburb is falls. Falls are a leading cause of injury-related deaths and hospitalizations among older adults. The National Council on Aging reports that falls result in 2.8 million injuries treated in emergency departments each year, including over 800,000 hospitalizations and more than 27,000 deaths. Older adults are at a higher risk of falling due to factors such as decreased balance and mobility, chronic conditions, and medication use.
Another significant health concern for the elderly population in the Lake View Suburb is social isolation. Social isolation can lead to poor mental health outcomes, such as depression and anxiety, as well as physical health consequences, including a weakened immune system and increased risk of chronic disease. According to a study by the AARP Foundation, nearly one in three adults aged 65 and older reported feeling lonely.
Relation to Global Health Issue:
Both falls and social isolation are significant health concerns for the elderly population globally. According to the World Health Organization, falls are the second leading cause of accidental or unintentional injury deaths worldwide. Additionally, social isolation is a growing concern, particularly in developed countries where aging populations are becoming more common.
Healthy People 2030 Objectives:
Healthy People 2030 objectives related to falls prevention in older adults include increasing the number of older adults who participate in evidence-based fall prevention programs and increasing the percentage of health care providers who assess older adults for fall risk. Objectives related to social isolation in older adults include increasing the proportion of older adults who report having social support and increasing the percentage of primary care
