Before you completed the assigned readings this week, had you ever considered the concept of antecedent intervention? Why or why not?
Before reading the assigned readings, I had never heard of the concept of antecedent intervention. I was familiar with the concept of interventions, but I didn’t realize that interventions could be implemented before a behavior occurs. I think this is an important distinction, because it means that we can take steps to prevent challenging behaviors from happening in the first place.
Based on the assigned readings, when do you think it is appropriate to apply antecedent interventions in the school setting?
I think antecedent interventions can be appropriate to apply in the school setting in a variety of situations. For example, they could be used to:
Prevent students from becoming frustrated or overwhelmed by difficult tasks.
Help students make better choices about their behavior.
Increase students’ motivation to learn.
Improve students’ social skills.

Here are three different antecedent interventions that could work on increasing a student’s motivation to behave or comply with adult task demands:
Provide choices. Giving students choices about their work or activities can help them feel more in control and motivated. For example, you could ask a student to choose between two different reading assignments, or you could let them choose a partner to work with on a project.
Set clear expectations. Students need to know what is expected of them in order to be successful. Make sure to provide clear instructions and expectations for all tasks and activities. You can also use visual aids, such as checklists or schedules, to help students stay on track.
Provide positive reinforcement. When students meet expectations or behave appropriately, be sure to provide positive reinforcement. This could involve giving them praise, stickers, or other rewards. Positive reinforcement can help students learn that good behavior is worth it.
As a school counselor, how could you help implement antecedent interventions in the schools?
As a school counselor, I could help implement antecedent interventions in the schools in a variety of ways. I could:
Train teachers and staff on the principles of antecedent interventions.
Provide consultation and support to teachers and staff who are implementing antecedent interventions.
Conduct research on the effectiveness of antecedent interventions.
Advocate for the use of antecedent interventions in schools.
I believe that antecedent interventions can be a valuable tool for preventing challenging behaviors and promoting positive behavior in schools. I am committed to helping schools implement these interventions effectively.
