Introduction
Addiction is a chronic and progressive disease that affects millions of people globally. It is a complex disorder that can be manifested in different forms such as substance abuse, gambling, or internet addiction. This paper will discuss the movie “Trainspotting” and analyze the identified client, interventions, co-occurring disorders, evidence-based treatment approach, and theoretical approach used to address the addiction. Additionally, the paper will reflect on personal thoughts and feelings while watching the movie.
Client Identification
The main character in the movie “Trainspotting” is Mark Renton, a heroin addict living in Edinburgh, Scotland. Mark is in his twenties and has been struggling with addiction for a long time. He has a history of criminal behavior, including stealing, lying, and cheating. He is unemployed, and his relationships with family and friends are strained. He has lost hope in life and sees no future beyond his addiction.
Presenting Issues and Interventions
Mark has attempted several interventions to overcome his addiction, including going through detoxification and rehabilitation programs. However, he always relapses and falls back into his addiction. Mark’s addiction has affected his life in several ways, including his physical and mental health, his relationships, and his employment opportunities. Mark has also exhibited impulsive behavior, including stealing and engaging in risky sexual behavior.
To determine the presence of addiction, a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment would be used. This assessment considers various factors such as physical symptoms, emotional and mental health, social and family history, and substance abuse history. The rationale for using this assessment is that it provides a holistic view of the client and helps in developing an individualized treatment plan.
Several issues could interfere with the intervention or treatment of addiction. Research Paper Writing Service: Professional Help in Research Projects for Students – One of the significant issues is the client’s level of motivation and willingness to change. If the client is not willing to participate in treatment, the chances of success are limited. Additionally, the presence of co-occurring disorders such as depression or anxiety can affect the client’s ability to focus on addiction treatment.
Co-occurring Disorders
Mark exhibits symptoms of depression, anxiety, and trauma related to his childhood experiences. His addiction has also affected his relationships with family and friends. For example, his relationship with his parents is strained, and his friends are also addicts. Mark’s addiction has caused emotional and financial distress to his loved ones, who have also become victims of his disease.
Client Conceptualization
A specific evidence-based treatment approach that can be used with Mark is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is a short-term treatment approach that focuses on helping clients change their thoughts, behaviors, and feelings. It is based on the premise that thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected and that changing one can affect the others. CBT can be used to address addiction and co-occurring disorders such as depression and anxiety.
The theoretical approach that can be incorporated into the treatment of Mark is the Social Learning Theory. This theory posits that individuals learn behavior through observation, modeling, and reinforcement. In the case of addiction, the theory suggests that individuals learn addictive behavior through observation of others or environmental cues. Therefore, the theory can be used to help Mark unlearn his addiction through positive reinforcement of desirable behavior.
Self-Reflection
Watching the movie “Trainspotting” was a thought-provoking experience. The movie portrays addiction in a realistic and raw manner, highlighting the devastating effects it can have on an individual’s life. It was hard to watch Mark’s struggles with addiction, and it made me realize the importance of empathy and understanding in helping those struggling with addiction.
The movie also made me appreciate the complex nature of addiction and the need for individualized treatment approaches. It made me reflect on how addiction affects not only the individual but also their loved ones,
