Examining fatal and non-fatal incidents involving the TASER- Criminal justice
The article is contradictory, it mentions an incident in which a police officer was charged with man slaughter after he shocked a suspect with a Taser multiple times and which led to his death. On the same paragraph, it mentions the report from the National Institute of Justice that mentioned the inconclusive medical evidence that a Taser could cause any serious injuries or even death. According to Logan. J, et al, reports have shown that generally, police officers find Tasers effective. The study from which the article was written from was done using media reports. Depending on news in order to know the fatality of a CED can give inconclusive results.
The article was right to suggest a partnership between law enforcement agencies and researchers in order to measure out the fatality of Tasers and also to research whether they are more fatal on people who are under the influence of drugs. According to Smith. G, et al, some people may be more susceptible to the fatality effect of Tasers. Other people are more affected because they are under medication. Despite Tasers being mentioned as the safest weapons in use today, there should be a research on police brutality and the fatality of this particular CED. The research article is biased on the element of police brutality during the use of Tasers because it depends on media reports. These reports do not cover the extent of police brutality in causing deaths through the use of Tasers. The article is correct to suggest more research because it is still debatable whether Tasers are the safest weapons in use by police officers today.
