Instructions
In your oral presentation, which will be posted in your dedicated discussion space, you will reflect on a patient whom you have cared for and who became acutely unwell.
Describe how you detected clinical deterioration using your learning from this unit alongside wider reading of scholarly resources.
Describe what was occurring on a physiological level.
Present and reflect on the patient management with reference to current evidence-based practice.
Please click on each of the following headings for details on how to complete and submit this assessment task!
Step 1: Getting started. Your topic.
- Select your patient
Select a case for analysis depicting a patient whom you have cared for and who has demonstrated an acute change in clinical status (deterioration) that required immediate assessment and escalation in management.
- Prepare your presentation
Prepare a PowerPoint presentation describing how you detected the deterioration, what was occurring on a physiological basis, and how you responded. You may want to use the following outline.
Introductory slide. (1 minute) Introduce yourself and your topic. Ensure that you use a pseudonym for your patient and state that this is not their real name. For example: “In this presentation, I will be describing a patient whom I will call Mr Pearce (pseudonym) who experienced an episode of acute pulmonary oedema.”
Background slide: 1-2 slides (1 minute). You may want to include presenting complaint/diagnosis if relevant.
Content slides: 4-5 slides (6-7 minutes). How did the patient present? How did you detect that deterioration was occurring and reflect on the experience? Questions to consider include
- Assessment findings: Did you miss any defining parameters? Were there any subtle cues or parameters that were obscure/misleading
2. What was occurring on a physiological level?
3. What did you do? (further assessment, interventions..)
4. Was the patient managed effectively, or was there room for improvement?
Conclusion slide: Summary of scenario (1/2 -1 minute)
References slide: Provide at least 8 references for your discussion (Use scholarly sources such as primary research publications which are less than or equal to 5 years old. Refrain from using websites such as Life in the Fast Lane, Mayo Healthcare).
Step 2: Record your presentation
All technical instructions are given on the page titled ‘Audio-Visual Presentations Guide’ included in this folder on the page that follows.
It is recommended that you use UTAS-supported tools and methods for this task.
Please read the instructions carefully ‘Audio-Visual Presentations Guide’.
Step 3: Sharing with your peers (Due Friday, 3rd October, 17:00 hrs AEST).
Upload your presentation to the dedicated discussion forum titled ‘Assessment Task 3: Oral Presentation and Discussion’ before the due date.
Go to the ‘Communication’ tab at the top of the page. Click on ‘Discussions’
Find and click on ‘Assessment Task 3: Oral Presentation and Discussion’
Click on ‘start a new thread’
In the title section ‘Enter a subject,’ write your presentation title and your name. For example, ‘Oral Presentation. Acute Pulmonary Edema. Your Name’
In the comments box, click the Insert Stuff icon.
In the ‘Audio-Visual Presentations Guide’ page that follows there are instructions on how to insert your recorded presentation, ‘submitting or sharing your video’.
Once the recording is embedded, click on ‘Post’
You have now completed Part A of the Assessment Task 3. Well done!
Step 4: Part B. Response to a Peer Presentation (due by Thursday, 16th October 17:00 hours AEDT)
Part B requires you to access the discussion space and select a presentation from one of your peers to respond to.
Return to the dedicated discussion forum “Assessment Task 3: Oral Presentation and Discussion.”
Review some of the presentations provided within the discussion forum and select one to respond to. Create a 350-word response to this presentation, considering the following
- Was there something that you could contribute?
- Is there a practice guideline/protocol that could be considered?
- Was there a diagnostic tool, such as a blood test/lactate level, that could be considered?
- Was there a nursing or medical intervention that could have been adopted?
Choose which intervention you wish to write about and create one to two paragraphs with at least 3 references.
Follow the guidelines for the School of Nursing Assessment Guidelines and remember to check the rubric to make sure you are meeting the requirements for the task!
