NUR 630 SMART Goals
This semester is going from a pediatric standpoint.
As you move through your pediatric clinical experiences, it’s a wonderful opportunity to focus on your professional growth and truly align your goals with your learning journey.
For this assignment, you will work on setting goals for yourself using the SMART method.
It’s important to take a little time to reflect on what you genuinely want to accomplish and how these goals will help shape your confidence as a pediatric nurse.
You will find an explanation of this method in the module that will guide you in your goal-setting process.
You will list a minimum of five professional goals that you would like to accomplish during the clinical experience in this term.
Think about skills, behaviors, or knowledge that you hope to improve upon and how these goals can impact your practice positively.
For each goal, you must provide an explanation of how the goal is representative of each of the SMART characteristics: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely.
As you write, try to connect each goal to your personal experiences and professional values—it makes your reflection more meaningful.
Be sure to answer the following questions for each goal summary:
Can you measure it? Is it attainable? Is it realistic? What is the time frame you have set for completing that goal?
Answering these honestly will help you see your growth clearly and identify areas where you can continue to build confidence.
Format: Each goal summary should be at least 100 words – totaling 500 words for this assignment (added to the speaker notes).
Remember, this is your chance to demonstrate thoughtful reflection as a developing professional while communicating clearly and effectively.
The presentation is original work and logically organized, formatted, and cited in the current APA style, including citation of references.
When you cite your sources, make sure they come from reputable and scholarly materials to strengthen the credibility of your work.
The presentation should consist of 10–15 slides (excluding the introduction and reference page).
Make your slides engaging and concise while ensuring your speaker notes provide the depth and detail needed for understanding.
This Assignment will be submitted to Turnitin.
Keep in mind that originality and authenticity are valued here—let your personal insight and professional integrity shine through your work.
Grading Rubric
Your assignment will be graded according to the grading rubric.
It’s a good idea to review this rubric before you start so you can align your goals and efforts with the highest expectations.
SMART Goals Rubric
Specific
Exemplary: The goal is personal and identifies areas of weakness in clinical practice. The goal is detailed and clearly focused on the specific skills, behaviors, and/or knowledge outlined in the course objectives.
A strong goal demonstrates clear purpose and helps guide your day-to-day actions during the clinical experience.
Measurable
Exemplary: Measures have been identified that will demonstrate learning, results, and/or progress as related to the described goal.
Being specific about how you’ll measure progress helps you track your improvement and stay motivated through the term.
Achievable/Ambitious
Exemplary: The goal set forth is realistic, motivating, challenging, and can be achievable within the term. There is a clear process described to support achievability.
Aim for goals that push you just enough to grow but are still attainable within your clinical schedule and course scope.
Relevant
Exemplary: The goal has a strong connection to the course objectives, the student’s history, current interests, and/or demonstrated abilities.
Connecting your goals to real-world nursing practice will help you see how classroom learning translates to patient care.
Timely
Exemplary: The goal has a definite date of what will be accomplished by this date and is linked to the measurables. It is within the time frame of this term.
Setting time boundaries adds focus and helps you stay accountable for your own professional growth.
Use of Citations, Writing Mechanics, and APA Formatting Guidelines
Exemplary: References page contains more than required current scholarly academic reference and text reference. Follows APA guidelines of components: double space, 12 pt. font, abstract, level headings, hanging indent. Rules of grammar, usage, and punctuation are followed; spelling is correct.
Taking care with your writing and citations reflects professionalism and respect for the standards of academic nursing.
PowerPoint Slides
Exemplary: PowerPoint presentation contains 10–15 slides. All parts of the assignment are completed fully and described in the PowerPoint presentation in detail.
Make your presentation visually engaging and easy to follow, so your audience connects with your ideas and insights.
