Using your textbook and the results of your personality test, you will answer the question prompts below in narrative form (no Q & A and no bulleted lists). 1. Take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment to examine your individual strengths and experiences in preparation for assuming management and leadership roles. 2. Write 5-6 pages using the headings and corresponding prompts below, which you should used in your paper: I. Leadership and Management Theory ■ How can you apply a leadership and management theory to achieve high quality nursing care for your patients and collaborate effectively with your health care team? Identify the citation(s) for the leadership or management theory you chose in answering this question. ■ Are you more of a leader or a manager? Please explain why you feel this way. In view of your results of the personality test, how can you strengthen aspects of your personality to grow more in leadership or in management? Which competencies do you need to strengthen to become the leader or manager you want to become? II. Change Theory ■ How do you deal with change at your practice setting? What personality traits would you utilize to promote change in your facility and how did you decide which traits you would use? Are there traits that you would not agree with and why do you think they appear? III. Communication Style ■ What did you learn about yourself taking the personality test? Which type of communicator are you? What are areas that you can strengthen to be more effective? To be more therapeutic? Leadership and Management in Nursing: A Personal Reflection
This paper aims to provide a personal reflection on leadership and management in nursing based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality assessment results and key concepts from the NUR 4827 course. The discussion will focus on leadership and management theories, change management, communication styles, and approaches to performance and quality improvement.
Leadership and Management Theory
As an introvert (I) and judger (J) personality type, I am inclined towards planning and structure (Myers et al., 1998). This suggests I am more suited to management roles which involve organizing systems and processes. However, nursing also requires strong leadership to motivate teams and drive change. One theory that could help strengthen my leadership abilities is situational leadership. Developed by Hersey and Blanchard (1969), this model proposes that leadership style should adapt to followers’ competence and commitment. By understanding team members’ capabilities and adjusting my direction and support accordingly, I can maximize their performance in achieving quality patient care.
Are You a Leader or Manager?
While I enjoy planning and coordination aspects of management, my personality profile indicates a preference for ideas over actions (Myers et al., 1998). This implies a greater aptitude for visioning and strategic leadership. To strengthen my managerial skills, I will focus on delegation, monitoring progress, and providing constructive feedback – all of which do not come naturally to my personality but are crucial for effective management (Northouse, 2019).
As an introvert, I tend to analyze information internally before deciding on a course of action (Myers et al., 1998). This cautious approach could slow change initiation. However, my ability to consider various perspectives would aid buy-in for new ideas. To promote change, I would draw on traits of openness to new experiences and conscientiousness in thorough planning (Judge et al., 2002). These balanced by extraversion could help overcome resistance through engagement and motivation.
My MBTI profile revealed a preference for intuition and thinking in decision-making (Myers et al., 1998). While logical analysis benefits management, nursing also requires empathy and rapport building. To strengthen therapeutic communication, I will practice active listening, seek to understand others’ feelings, and express care and support (Carroll, 2018). Barriers like making assumptions and not clarifying meanings can be overcome through reflective questioning and feedback.
Performance and Quality Improvement
A systematic approach combining performance and quality improvement could optimize outcomes. Firstly, collaboratively setting clear, measurable goals aligned with organizational strategy ensures efforts target priorities (Batalden et al., 2016). Regular monitoring and problem-solving meetings then support continuous progress reviews against these aims (Langley et al., 2009). Finally, recognizing and learning from successes and failures drives sustained enhancement (Scoville et al., 2016). My leadership in structuring such a process alongside empowering staff innovation could maximize both efficiency and standards of care.
This personal reflection has provided insights into my strengths and areas for development as a nurse leader and manager. Applying relevant theories and focusing on competencies like communication, change facilitation and a balanced focus on performance and quality will help me grow into a role where I can most effectively contribute to the nursing profession.
