Assignment 1
Leadership Profile: Reflecting on Experiences, Assessing Strengths, and Developing a Plan for Mastery
Introduction:
Leadership is a critical skill for individuals in both personal and professional settings. Effective leadership requires an understanding of one’s unique leadership style, personality traits, and emotional intelligence. In this paper, I will reflect on my leadership experiences, assess my strengths, evaluate my emotional intelligence and DiSC profile, and develop a plan for mastering my leadership style.
Reflecting on Leadership Experiences:
In my most recent professional role as a project manager, I had the opportunity to lead a team of six individuals in the development and implementation of a new software system. The leadership aspects of this role included setting goals and objectives, delegating tasks, motivating team members, resolving conflicts, and ensuring project milestones were met.
Two key experiences that impacted me as a leader were:
Leading a team through a major change initiative: In this experience, I had to navigate through resistance to change, communicate effectively, and manage expectations while ensuring the team remained focused on the end goal. This experience taught me the importance of empathy, active listening, and open communication in driving successful change initiatives.
Coaching a team member to improve their performance: This experience taught me the importance of providing constructive feedback, setting clear expectations, and providing support and resources for improvement. It also highlighted the importance of recognizing and leveraging team members’ strengths to drive overall team success.
Assessing Leadership Strengths:
Two key strengths from Jack Welch’s Foundational Principles and 8 Essential Rules of Leadership that pertain to my leadership development are:
Candor: As a leader, I believe in being transparent and honest with my team members, stakeholders, and colleagues. Candor builds trust, fosters open communication, and enables individuals to take ownership of their actions and decisions. I practice candor by providing constructive feedback, admitting mistakes, and seeking feedback from others.
Energize Others: As a leader, I believe in empowering and motivating my team members to achieve their full potential. I do this by recognizing and celebrating their achievements, providing opportunities for growth and development, and leading by example. Energizing others builds a positive and productive work environment, promotes collaboration, and fosters a sense of ownership and accountability.
Emotional Intelligence and DiSC Profile:
My emotional intelligence assessment revealed that I have a strong ability to recognize and manage my emotions, and the emotions of others. I am skilled at building relationships, communicating effectively, and influencing others. My DiSC profile indicated that I am a “D” (Dominant) personality type, which means that I am direct, results-oriented, and decisive.
My leadership experiences and strengths relate to aspects of my emotional intelligence and DiSC profile by highlighting my ability to build relationships, communicate effectively, and influence others. As a “D” personality type, I am naturally suited to taking charge, setting goals, and driving results. However, I must be mindful of how my directness may impact others, and work to build stronger relationships with my team members to ensure they feel supported and valued.
Developing a Plan for Mastering Leadership Style:
To master my leadership style, I have identified two key skills that I would like to develop in the future:
Conflict Resolution: As a leader, I often encounter conflicts and challenges that require effective conflict resolution skills. To master this skill, I plan to enroll in a conflict resolution course, seek feedback from colleagues, and practice active listening and empathy when dealing with conflicts.
Emotional Intelligence: While I have a strong emotional intelligence foundation, I believe there is always room for improvement. To master this skill, I plan to read books and articles on emotional intelligence, seek feedback from colleagues, and practice mindfulness and self-reflection to increase my awareness and control of my emotions.
To measure my success in mastering these skills, I plan to set specific goals and metrics. For conflict resolution, my goal is to resolve conflicts within my team in a timely and effective manner, resulting in improved team performance and morale. To measure my progress, I will track the number of conflicts resolved, the time taken to resolve them, and feedback from team members on the effectiveness of my conflict resolution skills.
For emotional intelligence, my goal is to improve my ability to recognize and manage my emotions, as well as the emotions of those around me. To measure my progress, I will track my emotional reactions to situations, and seek feedback from colleagues on my ability to recognize and respond appropriately to their emotions.
Reflecting on my leadership experiences, assessing my strengths, and evaluating my emotional intelligence and DiSC profile has helped me develop a plan for mastering my leadership style. By focusing on developing conflict resolution and emotional intelligence skills, and setting specific goals and metrics to measure my progress, I am confident that I can continue to grow as a leader and make a positive impact in my organization.
