Grade level: 9-12

Duration: 2-3 class periods

Objectives:

Students will be able to analyze and understand the plot and themes in “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”
Students will be able to use 4 reading comprehension strategies (summarizing, predicting, making connections, and asking questions) to enhance their understanding of the text
Students will be able to participate in a class discussion and express their own opinions and insights about the story
Materials:

Copies of “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” for each student
Whiteboard and markers
Chart paper and markers
Introduction (15 minutes):

Introduce the story and its author, Mark Twain, to the students.
Discuss the context of the story, including its setting and time period.

Reading and Comprehension Strategies (30 minutes):
