A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a specialization in adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AGACNP) is a graduate-level program that prepares registered nurses (RNs) to care for adult and elderly patients with acute, critical, or complex health issues. AGACNPs work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, and other acute care facilities.
In an MSN program with a specialization in AGACNP, students will typically take coursework in advanced nursing practice, including topics such as pharmacology, pathophysiology, health assessment, and diagnostic reasoning. They will also receive clinical training in caring for adult and elderly patients with acute and complex health issues, such as heart attacks, strokes, respiratory failure, and trauma.
To be eligible for an MSN program with a specialization in AGACNP, students must typically have a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) and a current RN license. Some programs may also require applicants to have a certain amount of clinical experience as an RN.
Upon completion of an MSN program with a specialization in AGACNP, graduates are eligible to take the certification exam offered by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) to become a certified adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AGACNP-BC). This certification is recognized nationally and demonstrates that the nurse has the knowledge and skills to provide advanced nursing care to adult and elderly patients with acute and complex health issues.
