Population-Level Health Assessment and Intervention for Selected Practice Problem

Group Paper
Completion requirements
Opened: Monday, July 3, 2023, 12:01 AM
Due: Saturday, July 8, 2023, 11:59 PM
The purpose of this assignment is to identify health objectives from Healthy People 2030 that will impact health outcomes through population-level health assessment and intervention. This assignment will allow for a discovery of a selected practice problem, encompassing social determinant risk factors, an evidence-based population health intervention, and relevant measurable goals and objectives.
For this assignment, each group will:
• Provide a brief statement introducing the selected practice problem.
• Identify three social determinant risk factors for the selected practice problem.
• Based on the health risk/problem identified, describe the strategies/methods that you will implement. Focus on primary and secondary prevention strategies. Refer to Healthy People 2030 Topics and Objectives. You may access the website at: https://www.healthypeople.gov.
• Describe a related Healthy People 2030 Goal and how it correlates with the selected practice problem.
• Describe one evidence-based intervention to address the Healthy People 2030 goal.
• Define one measurable objective to address the Healthy People 2030 goal. This is a GROUP assignment. Groups have been randomly assigned and the group assignments have been posted in Moodle. Submissions will be made via Moodle link. Only one submission per group.

GROUP PAPER DUE DATE: Week 9, Saturday by 23:59 pm
Complete the paper according to APA 7th Edition Guidelines as a word-processed document. Students are strongly encouraged to use the MRU Library & Learning Resource Center for support in writing your paper. For more information, please contact the library at library@mru.edu. Population-Level Health Assessment and Intervention for Selected Practice Problem

The selected practice problem for this group paper is childhood obesity. Childhood obesity is a significant public health concern that has long-term implications for the health and well-being of individuals and communities. It is characterized by excessive body fat accumulation, which can lead to various health problems such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and psychological issues. The prevalence of childhood obesity has been increasing globally, and it is influenced by various social determinants of health.

Social Determinant Risk Factors:

Socioeconomic Status (SES): Low socioeconomic status is strongly associated with an increased risk of childhood obesity. Children from low-income families often have limited access to healthy foods, opportunities for physical activity, and quality healthcare. Additionally, socioeconomic disparities can lead to chronic stress and limited educational resources, which contribute to unhealthy lifestyle behaviors.

Food Environment: The food environment plays a crucial role in shaping dietary patterns and behaviors in children. Communities with limited access to affordable, healthy foods, also known as food deserts, are more likely to rely on cheap, energy-dense, and nutrient-poor options. The availability of fast food restaurants and the marketing of unhealthy foods targeted towards children further exacerbate the risk of childhood obesity.

Sedentary Lifestyle: Sedentary behaviors, such as excessive screen time and lack of physical activity, are significant risk factors for childhood obesity. Children who spend prolonged periods engaging in sedentary activities have reduced energy expenditure, lower muscle strength, and increased adiposity. The prevalence of sedentary behaviors has increased due to advancements in technology and changes in lifestyle.

Strategies and Methods:
To address childhood obesity, we propose the implementation of primary and secondary prevention strategies. Primary prevention focuses on reducing the occurrence of obesity, while secondary prevention aims to identify and manage obesity in its early stages.

Primary Prevention:
a. Health education and awareness programs: Implementing comprehensive health education programs in schools and communities to promote healthy eating habits, physical activity, and the importance of a balanced lifestyle.
b. Promotion of breastfeeding: Encouraging exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, as breastfed infants have a reduced risk of developing obesity.
c. School-based interventions: Creating supportive environments in schools that promote healthy eating options, physical activity, and policies to reduce sedentary behaviors.

Secondary Prevention:
a. Screening and early identification: Conducting routine screenings for obesity and related risk factors in healthcare settings, schools, and community centers to identify children at risk and provide appropriate interventions.
b. Multidisciplinary interventions: Collaborating with healthcare professionals, nutritionists, physical therapists, and psychologists to provide comprehensive care and individualized interventions for children identified with obesity.

Healthy People 2030 Goal:
The selected Healthy People 2030 goal that correlates with the practice problem of childhood obesity is “Reduce the proportion of children and adolescents with obesity.” This goal aligns with the broader objective of promoting overall health and well-being in children and adolescents.

Evidence-Based Intervention:
One evidence-based intervention to address the Healthy People 2030 goal is the implementation of the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) program. CATCH is a school-based program that focuses on improving nutrition education, increasing physical activity, and creating healthy environments. It involves classroom curriculum, physical education components, and changes to the school food environment to promote healthier choices.

Measurable Objective:
One measurable objective to address the Healthy People 2030 goal of reducing childhood obesity is to “Increase the percentage of schools implementing evidence-based nutrition education programs by 20% within three years.” This objective emphasizes the importance of integrating evidence-based interventions into school settings to create sustainable changes in eating habits and promote healthy behaviors.

Childhood obesity is a complex public health issue influenced by various socialdeterminant risk factors. Addressing this problem requires a comprehensive approach that includes primary and secondary prevention strategies. By implementing evidence-based interventions and setting measurable objectives aligned with the Healthy People 2030 goal, we can make significant progress in reducing childhood obesity rates and improving the health outcomes of children and adolescents. Collaboration among healthcare professionals, educators, policymakers, and communities is essential to create supportive environments and promote healthy behaviors for our future generations.
