Postmenstrual Syndrome and Hormonal Changes
Postmenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a condition that affects some people after their period ends. It can cause physical and emotional symptoms, such as headaches, fatigue, anxiety, and depression. PMS is different from premenstrual syndrome, which occurs before the period starts. PMS is also not widely recognized in mainstream medicine and there is not much research on it.
One possible cause of PMS is hormonal imbalance. The hormones that play a role in PMS are estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. These hormones regulate the reproductive system and also influence brain chemicals, such as serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin, which affect mood and gastrointestinal health.
PMS may occur when there is a surge of estrogen and testosterone after the period ends. This can happen in anovulatory cycles, where ovulation does not occur. People with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), contraceptive implants, or insulin resistance may experience this. Insulin can affect how other hormones function and cause blood sugar fluctuations, which can also trigger PMS symptoms.
PMS can be treated with lifestyle changes, such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, managing stress, and getting enough sleep. Some people may also benefit from taking supplements, such as vitamin B6, magnesium, or omega-3 fatty acids, to help balance hormones and reduce inflammation. In some cases, medication may be prescribed to treat specific symptoms, such as antidepressants or painkillers.
PMS is a real condition that can affect a person’s quality of life. It is important to seek medical help if PMS symptoms interfere with daily activities or cause severe distress. PMS can be managed with proper care and support.
