INTRODUCTION:
Worth 35%
Groups – 5
Due: Week 11
Key Terms:
Hazard
A potential source of harm or adverse health effect on a person or persons. Hazards can be caused by human factors, situational factors and or environmental factors.
1. Human factors – unauthorized use of equipment, inadequate training, removal/disabling of safety devices
2. Situational factors – defective equipment, poor housekeeping, poor indoor air quality, fire and explosion conditions
3. Environmental factors – physical (noise, vibration, illumination, temperature extremes), chemical (solid, liquid, vapours, gases, dusts, fumes/mists, biological (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, plants)
Risk
1. The potential for a person to be harmed or suffer adverse health effects if exposed to a hazard.
2. The probability of an injury expressed as a percentage
3. Risk = Probability x Consequence x Exposure
ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS:
Each group will conduct a reconnaissance of an area (indoors and/or outdoors)- university, work, etc.
1. Acting as Joint Health and Safety Committee conduct a reconnaissance assessment. This is a group assignment
2. Create a hazard checklist AND Using TABLE 2 (RISK CRITERIA) Complete TABLE 1 (HAZARD INVENTORY & RISK EVALUATION) for each potential hazard identified.
3. Feel free to interview people working during your reconnaissance area to ask them about potential hazards that may occur in that area, may also take photos (examples: Facility Maintenance, Cafeteria, Laboratory Technicians, Professors etc….). Need first-class papers? Get Fast Essay Writers US & urgent essay writing service Ca – Note: you may also need to seek consent for area being inspected. Identify photos/which hazard does the phot represent.
4. Compile all this information assessing and discussing the hazards and their health effects/risks, including detailed recommendations for hazard prevention and controls, applying applicable legislation and research. A group presentation is then conducted highlighting the major findings, ratings, prioritizing hazard and recommendations.
5. Now that you’ve completed an informal inspection of the site/area you are to create a Formal Inspection Form that can be used for inspecting the area in the future – see attached sample inspection form for reference
6. On your assignment provide link and address of company that you assessed.
