Explain how e-business processes improve productivity, efficiency, and competitive advantage for business organizations and the public sector (government and nonprofit organizations).
Roles of e-Business in Business Success
E-Commerce uses information and communication technology to advance business transactions and relations between individuals, groups, and governmental bodies. Electronic platforms enable companies of all sorts to link their internal and external data processing in an efficient manner and to work closely and efficiently with suppliers to satisfactorily meet the needs and expectations of their customers. E-commerce involves electronic purchasing and supplying of commodities, electronic processing orders, provision of customer care services, and providing other corporation services. Data can freely flow between companies over an integrated intra- and inter-business processes based on e-business software.
According to Laudon and Laudon (2004), e-business is the means that has made possible online trading of goods and services, e-tailing, business research based on the internet, extranets, online business superintendence, website marketing, e-learning for staff training and development, and online communication through emails, phone calls among others. Business tools through which the abovementioned online business activities thrive are mobile phones, facsimile, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), Personal Computers (PCs), file transfer, intranet, the internet, extranets, and video conferencing (Varshney & Vetter, 2002). For example, a customer can take a few minutes to search and make an order for products on e-bay, Amazon.com, Netflix and others, and receives the order within few days throughout the world.
Companies achieve greater productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness when they employ the use of e-commerce whose advantage lies in the technology as well as in business process and in finding new markets. Businesses benefit hugely from the quicker and easier online communications, improved marketing abilities, increased operational time, and access to a large volume of business information through online research. In addition, Varshney and Vetter (2002) acknowledges that the cost of doing business over the World Wide Web is lower because of reduced transaction costs, efficient means of payment as PayPal, Amozon.com Cards, and reduced space requirements. Online business also presents an opportunity to meet many customers each day and to adopt new business models.
