ASSESSMENT TASK 2: ANALYTIC TASK
In this task students will analyse the extent to which a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) incorporates human dignity and the common good in practical ways.
Carefully read SDC 13 (Climate change). Choose one target, either target 13.1 or target 13.3 from SDG 13 (Climate Change), and analyse how it accounts for human dignity and the common good in the context of a specific global community? How is your course (Bachelor of Nursing) of study preparing you to do work that will make progress toward achieving this target?
Write in the genre of either an online feature article OR invited blog post
Hints:
Genre: MUST FOLLOW THIS, My teacher will not give marks if you won’t follow this Genre structure.
a. either an online feature article (like, e.g., Features | The Guardian)
b. or an invited blog post (like, e.g., Blog | SociSDG)
Target: the components that work together to address each individual SDG. SDG 13 has 5 “targets”. Choose only 1 target.
Target 13.1: Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related disasters
OR
Target 13.3: Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning
Specific global community: “International council of Nurses (ICN)”.
Course of study: Bachelor of Nursing
For your analysis, YOU must offer your reasoned opinion in the form of either: 1) an online feature article; or, 2) an invited blog post. Think about the discipline area and/or sector connected to your course of study (Bachelor of Nursing) globally.
It is a requirement that you must:
(A) Must cite the following five resources:

(B) identify your course of study, SDG 13 (Climate change), chosen target (13.1), and chosen specific global community “International council of Nurses (ICN)”.
Write covering all above aspect. Analyse how target 13.1 accounts for human dignity and the common good in the context of a specific global community?
Hints: Structure idea: 6 paragraphs, with clear focuses – e.g.,
a. 200 words introducing your response to the question. you might ask, e.g., What’s my course? What SDG target am I focusing on? In what ways is my course equipping me to work toward the SDG target you’ve selected? How well is my course doing this? Could my course be doing something differently? What is my course missing?
b. 200 words contextualising the SDG target you’ve chosen a. you might ask, e.g., What’s the SDG? What are the other targets? Why does this particular target matter to me?
c. 300 words contextualising your course of study a. identify your course, and start to allude themes and aspects of communities, human dignity, and the common good.
Hints: when you write this part, give examples; choose any 1st country (eg. Africa): Give climate change related example. Choose any 2nd country (eg. Bosnia) and give climate change related example. These 2 countries should have different climate change scenario/issues, so that you can compare, contrast, analyse and give your response.
d. 200 words analysing how the target accounts for human dignity in the context of a specific global community (“International council of Nurses (ICN)”.
e. 200 words analysing how the target accounts for the common good in the context of a specific global community (“International council of Nurses (ICN)”.
f. 200 words connect the dots between the previous paragraphs, so that you can draw some conclusions, and suggest some implications.

Title: Strengthening Resilience and Adaptive Capacity to Climate-related Disasters for the International Council of Nurses (ICN)
As a Bachelor of Nursing student, I am taking on the challenge of analysing how the Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13) incorporates human dignity and the common good in practical ways. Specifically, I have chosen target 13.1, which aims to strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related disasters, and I will analyse how this target accounts for human dignity and the common good in the context of a specific global community – the International Council of Nurses (ICN).
The SDG 13 is a global effort to mitigate the impact of climate change, which has adverse effects on the environment, social, and economic aspects of life. This SDG comprises five targets, and target 13.1 focuses on building resilience to climate-related disasters. It recognises that climate-related disasters, such as floods, storms, and heatwaves, disproportionately affect vulnerable communities, including women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
As a Bachelor of Nursing student, my course is preparing me to work towards achieving SDG 13 by providing me with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the health consequences of climate change. For instance, the course reading by McGill et al. (2023) highlighted the impact of climate-related disasters on children’s communication and well-being. The study demonstrates that children’s communication is essential in determining their physical and psychological recovery in the aftermath of a disaster. Therefore, nurses play a critical role in providing care, support, and rehabilitation to children affected by climate-related disasters.
In the context of ICN, target 13.1 accounts for human dignity by addressing the disproportionate impact of climate-related disasters on vulnerable populations. ICN is a global organisation representing nurses and nursing associations from 130 countries worldwide, and they play a critical role in promoting health and well-being for all people. Nurses are the backbone of healthcare systems, and they have a unique perspective on the health impacts of climate change. By building resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related disasters, nurses can help communities to prepare, respond, and recover from the impacts of climate change, and thus preserve human dignity.
Moreover, target 13.1 accounts for the common good by acknowledging that climate change is a global challenge that requires collective action. Climate change has no borders, and its impact is felt globally, regardless of nationality or socioeconomic status. Therefore, target 13.1 emphasises the importance of global cooperation, knowledge-sharing, and capacity building to enhance resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related disasters. ICN, as a global organisation, can facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery, and thus promote the common good.
In conclusion, strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related disasters, as outlined in target 13.1, is crucial for preserving human dignity and promoting the common good. As a Bachelor of Nursing student, my course is equipping me with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to achieving this target. In the context of ICN, nurses have a critical role in building resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related disasters and thus promote health and well-being for all people, regardless of their vulnerability or location. Through global cooperation and knowledge-sharing, ICN can contribute to achieving target 13.1 and ultimately promote the common good.
