Portfolio Assignment: The Role of the Nurse Informaticist in Systems Development and Implementation

Assume you are a nurse manager on a unit where a new nursing documentation system is to be implemented. You want to ensure that the system will be usable and acceptable for the nurses impacted. You realize a nurse leader must be on the implementation team.

To Prepare:
Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and reflect on the scenario presented.
Consider the benefits and challenges associated with involving a nurse leader on an implementation team for health information technology.
The Assignment: (2-3 pages)

In preparation of filling this role, develop a 2- to 3-page role description for a graduate-level nurse to guide his/her participation on the implementation team. The role description should be based on the SDLC stages and tasks and should clearly define how this individual will participate in and impact each of the following steps:

Planning and requirements definition
Analysis
Design of the new system
Implementation
Post-implementation support

The nurse informaticist will also work closely with other members of the implementation team, including IT professionals and other healthcare providers, to gather feedback and input on the proposed system. This will involve conducting surveys, interviews, and focus groups to gather information on the needs and preferences of users. The nurse informaticist will also use this information to develop a detailed plan for the implementation of the new system, including timelines, milestones, and resources required.
Design of the New System
In the design phase, the nurse informaticist will play a vital role in developing the new system, including designing the user interface, selecting the appropriate software and hardware, and testing the system to ensure that it meets the needs of users. This will involve working closely with IT professionals and other members of the implementation team to ensure that the system is easy to use, efficient, and effective. The nurse informaticist will also be responsible for developing any necessary training materials, such as user manuals and tutorials, to ensure that users are able to effectively use the new system.
Implementation
During the implementation phase, the nurse informaticist will play a key role in ensuring that the new system is successfully implemented. This includes working closely with IT professionals and other members of the implementation team to ensure that the system is configured and set up correctly, and that any necessary training is provided to users. The nurse informaticist will also be responsible for monitoring the progress of the implementation, identifying any issues or problems, and taking corrective action as needed.
Post-Implementation Support

This includes monitoring the system to ensure that it is functioning correctly, identifying and resolving any issues or problems that arise, and providing training and support as needed.
