Introduction:

The goal of this paper is to summarize and analyze the results of a needs assessment in program development for staff or basic nursing education programs. The focus of the search is on peer-reviewed journal articles published after 2005. This paper aims to provide a clear and elaborate description of the results of the needs assessment in each article and describe the influence of the results of the needs assessment on the curriculum design. This paper also aims to support the analysis with literature and use at least three journal articles in addition to textbooks.

Peer-Reviewed Journal Article Search Process and Results:

The search for peer-reviewed journal articles was conducted using the Herzing Library databases. The databases used were CINAHL, MEDLINE, and PubMed. The search terms used were “program development,” “staff education,” “nursing education,” “curriculum,” and “needs assessment.” Filters were applied to narrow the search to peer-reviewed journal articles published after 2005. The search resulted in 15 peer-reviewed journal articles, and after reviewing each article’s abstract, three articles were chosen that met the criteria of the search.

Results of the Needs Assessment in Each Article:

Article One: “Identifying Staff Development Needs Using the Delphi Technique.”

This study aimed to identify staff development needs using the Delphi technique. The participants of this study were nurses and managers working in a public hospital. The results of this study showed that the top three identified staff development needs were communication, clinical leadership, and patient-centered care. The study also revealed that the Delphi technique was effective in identifying staff development needs.

Article Two: “Assessment of the Educational Needs of Clinical Nurses for Developing Curriculum in Educational Hospitals of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences.”

This study aimed to assess the educational needs of clinical nurses for developing a curriculum in educational hospitals of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences. The results of this study showed that the top three identified educational needs were patient education, clinical skills, and communication skills. The study concluded that assessing the educational needs of clinical nurses is essential for developing a curriculum that is tailored to meet their needs.

Article Three: “A Needs Assessment for Developing an Undergraduate Nursing Curriculum for a University in Saudi Arabia.”

This study aimed to conduct a needs assessment for developing an undergraduate nursing curriculum for a university in Saudi Arabia. The results of this study showed that the top three identified needs were integrating cultural competence into the curriculum, developing communication skills, and incorporating clinical reasoning and decision-making. The study concluded that the results of the needs assessment were essential in developing an undergraduate nursing curriculum that met the needs of Saudi Arabian students.

Influence of the Results of the Needs Assessment on Curriculum Design:
