Role of the Nurse Leader in a Healthcare Project
Communication with Stakeholders
Establish regular communication channels (meetings, reports, etc.) to disseminate updates and gather feedback from physicians, nurses, administrators, patients/families, and other stakeholders (Heller et al., 2016).
Clearly communicate the goals, timeline, and expectations for the project to gain buy-in and support from stakeholders (Wong et al., 2018).
Develop a training plan and schedule to educate clinical staff on any new policies, procedures, or technologies resulting from the project (Sfantou et al., 2017).
Ensure all staff complete mandatory training to successfully implement changes when the project launches (Kotter, 1996).
Create a detailed budget projecting costs for the duration of the project (Mosadeghrad, 2014).
Monitor expenses and work with administrators to address any cost overruns or funding issues that could delay completion (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2018).
Change Management – Kotter’s 8 Step Process
Increase urgency, build a guiding coalition, form a strategic vision/initiative, enlist volunteers, enable action, generate short-term wins, sustain acceleration, institute change (Kotter, 1996)
Have the authority and support of upper administration to make critical decisions impacting the project (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2018).
Resolve issues and remove barriers impeding progress through their position and influence within the organization (Wong et al., 2018).
Communication with Stakeholders (cont.)
Clearly define roles and gain commitment from physician champions to influence adoption of changes by medical staff (Kotter, 1996).
Address concerns of nurses and provide support to facilitate their buy-in and participation in the project (Sfantou et al., 2017).
Ensure training accommodates various learning styles and levels of technical skills among staff (Heller et al., 2016).
Provide ongoing training and support during implementation to troubleshoot issues that arise (Wong et al., 2018).
Reallocate funds if needed between budget items to stay within budget while meeting project goals (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2018).
Negotiate additional funding from administrators if contingencies require more funds to complete the project successfully (Mosadeghrad, 2014).
Change Management – Kotter’s 8 Step Process (cont.)
Cite Kotter’s (1996) eight steps for successful change management and how each step would be applied.
Have final decision-making power on project timelines or scope if delays or issues arise (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2018).
Resolve conflicts between stakeholders and facilitate compromise through their legitimate power and position (Wong et al., 2018).
